Nepal: Significant Cholera Increase, Mainly in Lalitpur District – August 2024

According to Nepal’s Ministry of Health, more than 16 laboratory-confirmed cases of cholera per week are being reported, mainly in Lalitpur district. Fifty laboratory-confirmed cases, a significant increase over average incidence, have been reported since late July 2024 in the capital city of Kathmandu and in Kailali, Lalitpur, and Pyuthan districts. The outbreak has yet to peak. Cholera vaccination should be considered for aid and refugee workers and medically vulnerable persons going to affected areas and for travelers visiting friends and relatives in these areas. Travelers, regardless of vaccination status, should observe strict food and beverage precautions and hand hygiene.
