The New York Center for Travel and Tropical Medicine

The New York Center for Travel and Tropical Medicine is a referral center providing pre-travel consultative services and immunizations as well as treatment for travel related illnesses and post travel medical screening. The Center is involved in the development of educational programs for teaching travel medicine and training practitioners in this emerging specialty. The Center is part of a clinical trials network involving studies related to viral hepatitis, diarrheal disease and emerging infectious diseases.

Referral Center for Travel Related Illness and Post Travel Medical Screening
Diagnostic laboratory capabilities include examination for diarrheal pathogens, parasite panel, Clostridium difficile toxin assay, Helicobacter pylori serology, as well as stool microscopy, CBC, HIV, PPD, chest x-ray, and physical examination, as well as full-service gastroenterology diagnostic services including endoscopy. We service corporations with large expatriate populations for periodic post-travel screening.

Hepatology Services
We are a viral hepatitis study center in collaboration with the New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell University Medical College, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Our aim is to further clinical research and teaching in the field of viral hepatitis. We provide clinical trials capability for other hepatitis A and B projects (e.g. the need for booster doses, accelerated hepatitis B schedules for travel, etc.)

Training in Travel and Tropical Medicine
This includes preceptorships, "hands-on" workshops, training for doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants in the field of travel medicine. Lectures, conferences, workshops, and hands-on training form the centerpiece of this effort. Topics likely to attract new practitioners to the field of travel medicine would include "Establishing and Operating a Travel Medicine Clinic," "Promoting and Marketing Your Travel Medicine Practice." We are involved in the production of enduring materials including CD-ROMs, monographs and printed material on topics of interest in travel medicine.

Clinical Trials Network
The New York Center for Travel and Tropical Medicine has been part of several clinical trials.

We are a founding member and New York City site for GeoSentinel, the emerging infectious disease network of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM).
